The MONOCLE Travel Guide to Lisbon
“9. Casa-Museu Medeiros e Almeida, Liberdade e Castilho
House proud
Despite being located in the city centre, the Casa-Museu Medeiros e Almeida is a quieter choice when it comes to museums. The decorative arts collection of Portuguese businessman António de Medeiros e Almeida is displayed across 26 galleries in his former home, which was extended in 1968 and converted into a private museum in 1973. As you stroll through the rooms take note of the difference between the old and new wings:the former was lived in whereas the latter, which is more lavish, was kitted out specially for the museum.
The 2,000-piece collection includes everything from pocket watches to paintings and dates from the 2nd to the 20th century.
Highlights include a Chinese porcelain bidet that belonged to the French royal family.”
